Philadelphia Neighborhoods Worth Exploring
Philadelphia is a city of neighborhoods, and the right one for you depends on how you like to live — walkable and busy, quiet and residential, historic, or new. Here is a short orientation to the kinds of areas buyers and renters most often ask about.
Historic and walkable
The older parts of the city — Center City, Old City, and the blocks around Society Hill and Queen Village — put you within walking distance of restaurants, shops and transit, often in buildings with real architectural character.
Tree-lined and residential
Neighborhoods such as Fairmount, Fishtown and parts of University City mix rowhouses with cafes and small businesses, giving you a residential feel without leaving the city.
New construction and high-rises
Along the waterfront and around Center City you will find newer condo towers and apartment buildings, many with amenities, parking and skyline views.
What to weigh as you explore
- Commute: how would you get to work, and how long would it take?
- Everyday errands: groceries, pharmacy, transit, parking.
- Building type: rowhouse, low-rise or high-rise.
- Noise and foot traffic at different times of day.
The best way to choose is to walk a few blocks in each area you are considering. I am happy to suggest a route and meet you there.
